Zimbabwe: The WELEAD Trust team visited Mutoko at Mutoko Centre on June 17, 2022, with the assistance of OSISA, to teach 40 youth about the Zimbabwean constitution.
Following that, the youth were sent out into Mutoko’s streets to distribute 400 flyers with constitutional information.
Male youth predominated throughout training for a variety of reasons, including local cultural views, which was one indication that young women in Mutoko were not particularly involved.
“It is critical that we have such engagements as we are having on constitution awareness as specified in section 7,” said one of the attendees, Blessing Mahachi.
However, because Mutoko participation is gendered, it is critical to change some perceptions of how women are viewed in our community.
“The days when women were not allowed to effectively contribute and engage in public spaces are over,” he continued.
“Young women and girls must be encouraged to actively participate in and understand Section 20 as it is taught.”
“I’ve learned a lot from this area, and I’m glad I took an interest in it because I’m not like any other young lady who is bound to patriarchal views. I support meaningful and active participation, and I am aware that everyone, regardless of gender, is treated equally under the law,” Lydia Kandemairi stated. “I’ve learned a lot.”
