Rethinking Democracy from a Feminist Tech Lens

April 16 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The WELEAD Trust, in partnership with Diakonia in Africa, the Swedish Embassy in Zimbabwe, AdvokC, and the Justice Code in Zimbabwe, embarked on a journey to promote democracy through the use of technology under a project called Rethinking Democracy from a Feminist Tech Lens.

This collaboration aimed to increase youth participation and leadership in democratic processes by utilizing technological tools. feminist perspective on technology was used to critically assess current trends in tech development for governance and youth participation in governance.

The project had two participants, a female (Precious Bondokoto) and a male (Munyaradzi Bondokoto), sent to Nigeria to learn about the use of technology in furthering democracy, and they were stationed at AdvoKC, a youth organization that advances technology and human rights.

Following the exchange program, the two students delivered an academic paper that was launched at Feminist Techie Symposium in Harare on April 16, 2024.

The event was attended by young people from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, the friends of WELEAD Trust and partners (both funding and implementing partners).

Dr Charles Mutasa officially launched the paper and he said, “the paper will not only benefit the Zimbabwean and Nigerian communities but everyone beyond boarders”.

Precious Bondoloto and Munyaradzi Togarepi (the authors of the paper), were awarded certificates and accolades for the work they produced.

The two (Bondokoto and Togarepi)also gave presentations during the Rethinking Democracy Symposium.
